On May 23rd, 2008,
I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have had 4 surgeries (a lumpectomy, then a mastectomy, and two reconstructive surgeries), and 16 rounds of chemo. So far…so good. I am thankful for all the support and encouragement I have received from family and friends; and I am thankful to be called a survivor. I wasn’t always thankful…in fact, there were many days and several sleepless nights when I cried out “Why me?!”, when fear griped me, when my faith was hanging by a thin thread, when my belief in the God who loves me was shaken to the core. However dark those days and nights were (and to be honest sometimes still are) I believe He is by my side, and I am thankful that He truly does sustain me. Whom do I have in Heaven but the Lord? Recently, my
heart was pierced by the following words of the psalmist in Psalm 73.
“Dreamers for a Cure” is the name we chose for our breast cancer ministry and our Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure team. Our mission is to provide prayer, encouragement, hope, and support to people affected by
breast cancer through the love of Jesus Christ.
…But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling,
My steps had almost slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant
As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
For there are no pains in their death,
and their body is fat…
When my heart was embittered
and I was pierced within,
then I was senseless and ignorant;
I was like a beast before You.
Nevertheless I am continually with You;
You have taken hold of my right hand.
With Your counsel You will guide me,
And afterward receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but You?
And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever…
I do not understand why there is so much death and disease and suffering in the world, but I have to believe that God is good. I pray that through my own trials I can help make a difference in this world. And I pray that if you are reading this now, you will be encouraged to join me.
Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure
Last year, my wonderful and supportive sister decided she was going to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. She signed up to raise $2300 and walk in a 3 day, 60 mile walk. After a little persuading, my husband and I decided to join the fight. I was not sure if I would be physically up to the challenge, but I was committed to try. My dear friend from high school decided she would join us too, so our team of four, “Dreamers for a Cure” was born. . We walked in the Philadelphia 3 Day in October 2009, and I am happy to say our small team raised over $11,000. In October 2010, we will be walking in the Atlanta 3Day. We would absolutely love it if you would like to join us! Training and fundraising is so much more fun when you have a team. We can laugh and cry together. Check out the events calendar for our next meeting and training day or click on the 3Day logo to make a tax deductible contribution to our team.
